Sam Grabowska about the work Subsumption: “A body cast in plaster that slowly changes positions. Another body drawn in a similar position with copper wire. The two interact, unable to limit or shape each other, stuck in, or sharing, space. Three suspended videos of figurative piles found in Rejmyre’s landscape: A bonfire that signals the death of winter. A rock covered in moss. A pile of glass debris from a factory accident. The growing pain of the refugee.”
Dr. Sam Grabowska is a child of immigrants, a recovering academic and an evangelist of place. In her current art practice, Grabowska combines bodily traces such as human hair and animal skin with industrial building materials such as concrete and PVC pipes to create sculptures where bodies, real or imagined, can seek refuge from emotional trauma. The work arises at the intersection between the human body and the architectural language.
