ROBYN BACKENJuly 2017

Robyn Backen was selected, in collaboration with SPACED, as our 2016–17 resident artist. She conducted a research visit in 2016 and is in the process of planning her return residency in 2017, where she will realize a significant project in Rejmyre that will also be exhibited as part of the SPACED 3 traveling exhibition.

Robyn Backen is an artist from Australia. She has now spent two months in Rejmyre, and in connection with Östgötadagarna the results of her work are presented: I Am Glass, a speaking glass installation, and Barn Wall, an outdoor sculpture inspired by the red-painted boards of local barns. Embedded in the wall’s transparency is a text that only becomes visible when the sun projects the mirrored letters onto the ground. The work will be moved to different locations in the village on Thursday and Friday. Residents, visitors, and children are invited to create shadow drawings of the work using sidewalk chalk.

Robyn Backen is part of the program Spaced 3: north by southeast (http://three.spaced.org.au/spaced-3-north-by-southeast/), which places Nordic and Australian artists in small communities in Western Australia and the Nordic countries. Rejmyre Art Lab is one of the Nordic host institutions.
