KERSTIN HEDMAN 1941–2023 Konsthallen Engelska Magasinet, Rejmyre
October 28th–December 2nd, 2023

Rejmyre Art Lab presents an exhibition of selected works by Kerstin Hedman, one of Östergötland’s foremost textile artists.

Kerstin Hedman (1941–2023) grew up in Norrköping, and in later years was based in Kalbo, in northern Östergötland. After many years of working as a textile artist and textile teacher in Sörmland and Östergötland, Kerstin, together with her late husband Nisse Sandström, created a cultural institution in Kalbo. There, they not only presented their own works in textile and painting but also invited a large number of artists to exhibit at their gallery Galleri Skatan. In recent years, Kerstin was also celebrated as a costume designer in Kalbokultur’s productions, where her great attention to detail ensured that costumes became an integral part of the performances.

Kerstin’s art, primarily made with tapestry techniques, depicts everything from personal memories and dreams to captivating nature motifs. Through her freehand embroidery, she created characteristic motifs of birds and people in motion. The exhibition also show sketches, photographs, and press clippings from Kerstin’s many active professional years, offering insight into a multifaceted artistic life that has been a great inspiration to many.

Kerstin Hedman was one of the initiators who established and ran the exhibition program at Engelska Magasinet in Rejmyre from 2007 to 2014, making this art gallery the ultimate place to present a retrospective of her collected works. The exhibition is a collaboration between Rejmyre Art Lab and Kerstin Hedman’s family, aiming to honor her memory and contributions as an artist, as well as to give visitors the opportunity to experience a remarkable body of work.
